Photograph caption dated May 31, 1958 reads "Streaking heavy black smoke from its powerful engines, Douglas Aircraft's huge DC-8 Jetliner lifts skyward for maiden flight to Edwards Air Force Base in Antelope Valley and intensive flight test program. Thousands watched event marking first jet transport built in Southern California. First flight took two hours and five minutes." The article partially reads "Nearly 20,000 spectators lined the fences at Long Beach Airport to watch the giant transport ease into the air with pilot Arnold G. Heimerdinger and his crew of 3 in command."
