Description
Photograph of a view looking north on Broadway, between 4th Street and 5th Street, October 1907. Most of the buildings are commercial and about 4 stories high. The street is busy with pedestrians walking down the sidewalks or crossing the street. Many horse-drawn carriages and early-model cars are parked along the curb or traveling down the street. Several streetcars are traveling down the street. Notable buildings are the Belasco Theatre (right) and the Broadway Central Building (center).
Legible signs include: "Belasco Th[eater], Belasco Mayer & Co., this week, 'On the Qui[...]", "we, Post Card Shop, [...]", "Optic Theatre, 5¢, moving pictures", "Parmelee, Dohrmann Company, dire[...], reta[iler ...], C[...], Glas[s ...], house[...], hotel[...]", "Varney & Green", "Trustee Property No. 2", "Broadway Central Building, L.A. Realty Site Co.", "The Bon March", "The Hub, world beaters for overcoats", "B. & O. Van, the storage", "Cummings", on a streetcar "Westlake Park, Melrose Ave.", "[...]ns, [... s]hoes, [...] in the world, [c]hildren, [...]5 S. B'dw'y", "Los Angeles Pacific Co.". Additional information: According to a number of sources, the play "On the Quiet" was performed at the Belasco Theater the week of October 21 through 28, 1907.
