During Peter Drucker’s lecture regarding managing the non-profit organization he begins by stating that most students, even those who work in government, do not understand how a government agency works because they assume it works like a business. He explains that one of the main themes of the course is that non-profit institutions believe by and large that good intentions matter, but unfortunately that is not enough and they must learn to focus instead on results. He then discusses the importance of definitions, specifically in regards to defining what a non-profit institute is. Drucker goes on to list some common definitions of what makes a non-profit institution and explain why each of these definitions are problematic. Some of these suggested definitions include, tax exemption and government ownership. He then goes on to share his experience working in a small liberal arts college and the school’s struggle to maintain it’s funding. Later he discusses the growth of the social sector and its effects on the non-profit institution.
