Photograph article dated September 6, 1962 partially reads, "Not since the day of the Sutter Creek gold rush have so many rockhounds been on the loose. In California alone there are 14,600 ORGANIZED rock hunters. And studies show that collecting rocks has become the second most popular hobby in America, next to photography. "The reason it has become so popular is that it's a family hobby," says Ray Mandeville, La Crescenta, president of the Verdugo Hills Gem and Mineral Society. We have members from 3 to 73 years old, most of whom are active rockhounds, he says." Pictured is Ray Mandeville standing alongside a copper-faced mask which was made from various polished-rock samples. He and several other club members spent some 1,250 hours on the project.; See image #00116898 for additional photo in this series.
