Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (silent): Fire at Willow Glen Methodist Church. From script, "Fire destroyed part of the Willow Glen Methodist Church at Minnesota and Newport this afternoon. Fire Inspector Mike Devitt estimated the damage at $60,000 and flames spread through the basement, swept up the altar and out through the roof. The blaze is believed to have started in a supply room in the basement. A large section of the altar was gutted. The chancery was completely destroyed. The fire smoldered inside the walls and under the floor of the sanctuary. Firefighters had to axe heir way through the floor to get at the blaze. The pastor, Reverend Ralph Fellersen, looked on remorsefully as smoke billowed from his church..." Segment 2 (silent): Shots of the exterior and interior of Leininger Community Center in Kelley Park, San Jose. People milling around inside, possibly an art exhibition. Segment 3 (silent): Scenes of a ceremony involving a bishop and many Catholic clergy. According to script, "The Most Reverend Joseph T. McGucken, Archbishop of San Francisco dedicated the Archbishop Mitty School in San Jose today. The 2-million dollar Roman Catholic high school at 5000 Mitty Avenue -- off Moorpark -- is administered by the Marianists and was financed by contributions to the Sant Mary's Cathedral drive. A standing room only crowd packed the gym for the ceremonies...as churchmen moved through the dedication with prayers, and colorful ritual. Archbishop McGucken read a letter of blessing from Pope Paul as he addressed the congregation. Then the Archbishop walked quickly through the halls and classrooms of the school offering prayers. The new high school is named for San Francisco's fourth archbishop -- John T. Mitty who died in 1961. Present for the ceremonies were his brother, William Mitty, and nephew, Msgr. Edward Mitty of New York. Guest speaker was San Jose attorney Mark Chargin."
