Description
Pictured in 1980 at Second and J Streets is Sacramento’s homage to the Pony Express, the 1,966 mile mail run from the Capital City to St. Joseph, Missouri. The relay was completed in 10 days by 80 riders. Due to the advent of the transcontinental telegraph, the Express was terminated after 18 months of operation. Over this span of time, nearly 616,000 parcels of mail were delivered, courtesy of the Express. The 15-foot-high bronze horse and rider were the work of sculptor Thomas Holland, and were commissioned by the Sophie Comstock Memorial Committee. The work was dedicated on July 4, 1976, as part of the American Bicentennial.
