Description
"Wesleyan Mission House, Oyo, West Africa". Rev. John Halligey served in Sierra Leone between 1869 to 1873 before moving to the Lagos district in Nigerai from 1885 to 1891. He stands outside a thatched house. Villagers are seated to one side, and a goat walks across the foreground.
Methodist Missionary work in West Africa had begun in 1811 with Coke's mission to Sierra Leone. A second station was opened on the River Gambia in 1821, and on the Gold Coast in 1834.
