Description
August Happ. The original name was thought to be August Borman. His parents died enroute to America. He took the name Happ from a close friend whose daughter he married. Early on he worked as a glass blower in San Francisco. At one time he worked for the flour mill but was said to have been fired when he voted for the wrong man. He married Gertrude Happ, and these are Anna Elkington's grandparents. August Happ was a Salinas Policeman from about 1896-1915. He was one of the first three Salinas Policemen. He was called a "night watchman." He died suddenly in 1915, but because he did not die on the job, he was not eligible for a pension. His daughter went to work for the Salinas Post Office in 1917 or 1918. Information provided by Anna Elkington 2013.
