Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Photograph caption dated December 21, 1956 reads “Years ago ox drawn carretas lumbered between Pueblo of Los Angeles and Mission San Fernando Rey de Espana near this spot where large bridge is being built to span Los Angeles River bed and carry eight lanes of traffic speeding along same route. Only natural traffic routes leading from Los Angeles to north fall in San Fernando Valley in form of five gateways which soon will be expressways. They are narrow valley of river bed shown above, path of Golden State Freeway; Calabasas, route of Ventura Freeway; Sepulveda boulevard through Santa Monica mountains, route of San Diego Freeway; Weldon Canyon-Newhall which will carry traffic from San Diego and Gooden State Freeways out of Valley; and Cahuenga Pass, pathway of Hollywood Freeway.” Photograph was published with image 00146988 to form one panoramic picture.
