Description
“One of Moukden [Shenyang] city gates from the top of the wall just inside the gate.” Exterior view of a fortified wall with an arched gateway. Manchuria, during this period, suffered some of the worst of the military campaigns and political unrest in China and a number of cities were attacked and under siege. Moukden was the centre for Scottish Missionary activity in the Manchuria field and a number of hospitals, schools and orphanages were built there. Dr Dugald Christie (1855-1936) is strongly associated with Shenyang after being appointed to the field in 1881. It was there that he founded the Moukden Free Hospital and also the Moukden Medical College where he encouraged the education of indigenous doctors and medical staff.
