Ralph Sheldon, asserted former Chicago gangster, hides his face as he learns that he has been indicted in connection with the $50,000 kidnapping of E. L. "Zeke" Caress, and the ensuing gun battle at Long Beach, in which a policeman was seriously wounded. Sheldon was very "backward" about having himself photographed. Frank L. "Lefty" James was the detective responsible for breaking this case. Photo dated: December 30, 1930.
