Description
Photograph used for three articles in 1937, 1938 and finally in 1959.
Frank L. "Lefty" James, former detective lieutenant and nemesis of the prohibition era died early today at his home, located at 220 S. Catalina St. A member of the Los Angeles Police Dept. from 1913-1939, James was the head of the infamous "Gangster Squad" in the 1920s and was said to have scared many bigtime hoodlums out of Los Angeles just by talking to them before they were able to cause any real trouble. He broke one of the most publicized cases of the day, when in 1930 he found and arrested four gangsters who had kidnapped Zeke Caress, a well-known gambling figure. He suffered a heart attack in 1956 and had been in good health since. He leaves his widow Bobbe, two sons George and James, and a daughter, Mrs. Joan Icardo.
