Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated November 11, 1963 partially reads, "Mild-mannered, cheerful Mae Carden doesn't look like a rebel, but, educationally speaking, she is. She has caused an educational furor by suggesting that teaching methods, not students, are responsible for most pupil failures. 'I don't give grades, but I guarantee success,' she said, during an interview at the Valley Carden School in North Hollywood. Miss Carden believes any student who has the mental capability to be in a regular school has the ability to master reading, the key subject in her education plan. Unfortunately, she feels, fewer and fewer students are receiving a proper foundation in reading skills."
