Dodger Stadium in the Los Angeles area of Chavez Ravine, just north of downtown, is currently the third oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Construction began in 1959, it opened on April 10, 1962, and has been home to the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team ever since. It was designed by architect Emil Praeger and was built by the Vinell Construction Company. The stadium sits on 300 acres and has a capacity of 56,000, with 16,000 parking spaces. The stadium was privately financed by Walter O'Malley with an original proposed cost of $12 million but was finally completed at a cost of $23 million. Dodger Stadium's official address is 1000 Elysian Park Avenue. Photograph article dated March 4, 1963 partially reads, "Otto Zipper, president of the California Sports Car Club, hopes to make the road races around Dodger Stadium a twice-a-year event and make the course longer to permit more cars to compete. Zipper admitted Sunday that the two-day amateur races through the parking lot of the baseball park in Chavez Ravine were not as successful as hoped. 'Because the course was only 1.3-miles long, we could only race as many as 15 cars in one event,' Zipper said." Photograph caption reads, "California Sports Car Club drivers fly around tricky turn at Chavez Ravine Sunday - Los Angeles skyline looms in background. Average speeds over the 1.3-mile course were kept in check."
