Description
Photograph of "The Reception Committee" for the first group of incarcerees arriving in a line of cars stretching in the distance. In the background the Alabama Hills are visible. In the foreground are several groups observing the arrival including military police. Adjacent to the photograph is a quote from March 1942 by Vera Jones (a Lone Pine resident), "We watched the Japanese pass our house on their way to Manzanar in every conveyance from limo to pick-up trucks. I admire their ability to adjust to our cruel injustice. ..." Caption reads: Reception committee, March 23, 1942. Title from caption. Photo from: "The Beginning" panel created by Shiro "Shi" Nomura (ecm_nom_0400). The Eastern California Museum Object ID for this item is 1994.82.5.1.
A collection of panel collages created by Shiro and Mary Nomura, both of whom were incarcerated at Manzanar from 1942-1945, for the Eastern California Museum's Manzanar Project. The panels are comprised of photographs, artifacts, documents, and stories collected by "Shi" starting in the 1970s. Over the following 20 years, the Nomuras assembled more than 75 panels depicting their personal interpretation of Manzanar 'camp' life, major events, history, and site preservation efforts. In each panel Shi and Mary provide valuable first-person documentation from their experiences. These panels have been displayed at various community events, annual Manzanar Pilgrimages, and the Eastern California Museum (the permanent home of the collection).
