Article by Charles Handy on traditional management development. According to Handy, traditional management approaches originated in role culture approaches, which are appropriate to steady-state activities in organizations and thus may not be appropriate for other types of cultural contexts. He proceeds to describe several different types of cultures, namely, the power culture, role culture, task culture, person culture, and the choice culture. Handy then identifies two objectives of management development, providing for the future management needs of the organization, and individual employee advancement. He then analyzes how these twin objectives correspond with the different management cultures. Ultimately, he concludes that the only management tasks that can be executed in a uniform way are the diagnostic and forecasting duties.
