Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph from article dated July 29, 1963 shows 17-year-old Sylmar High School graduate and amateur astronomer, Ralph Merletti with his viewing equipment. "Ralph set up his telescope in his front yard before the eclipse began with the help of a few friends. The telescope which he put together himself from old microscopes and telescopes, intensified the sun's image and cast it on a white sheet of cardboard." Merletti took readings and photographs of the solar eclipse that occurred the week before and released his findings in a report he compiled. "'It looked like a lot of cookie bites,' said the 17 year old."
