Description
This 1950s photograph shows the Star Cafe at 300 J Street, the Plaza Rooms, also at 300 J Street, and the Troy Hotel in the Nagele Building at 302 J Street.
J.J. Nagele constructed this building in 1903 to replace an earlier brick property which deteriorated to the point of posing a public hazard. The building in this photo had space for flats, offices, and storefronts.
Italian immigrant Sam Dalessandro opened the Star Cafe at 300 J in the 1930s. They temporarily lost their liquor license for price gouging in 1944.
The Sacramento Redevelopment Agency destroyed this building as part of midcentury "urban renewal" projects.
