Description
Photograph of the picturesque veteran of covered wagon days, Ezra Meeker, on his arrival from New York by oxcart, to witness the first great airmeet in the United States in 1910 at Dominguez Field near Los Angeles. Two airplanes are flying overhead. Several other people are in the image including one in the wagon seat and one on a horse behind the wagon. This airmeet created an idea in Meeker's mind that persisted for twenty years which he realized a short time before he died, when he made an airplane flight over the covered wagon trail he covered many years before. Meeker was the author of "Seventy Years Progress in the State of Washington". Writing legible on the side of Meeker's wagon: "Ox team book of 48 pages, 23 illustrations by Ezra Meeker, 25[?] cloth bound, 50[?] paper cover
The old Oregon Trail monument expedition left Puyallup near Tacoma [...] Jan. 29th 1906, arrived in Washington[?] Nov. 29th 1907, distance 3650 miles
[...], series B, 16 postcards"....
Photoprint reads: "The old and the new in transportation, 1912".
