Colonel M.D. Pickle (United States Marine Corps).
Supplementary material reads: "Gershon. City Desk. Illus. Daily. Hero award post. Mrs. Charles S. Dunne, widow of gallant Hollywood Marine Lieutenant and her daughter Donelda, 7, during ceremonies and award of posthumous Silver and Gold Star (in Lieu of 2 Silver Stars) for action in June and September of 1951 in Korea. Captain J.Y. Dannenberg, USN, Commandant, United States Naval Base, Terminal Island, makes award. Marine Officer in picture is Colonel MD. Pickle, USMC, Commanding officer, USMC attached to Naval Base, Terminal Island".
