Description
This label for Vesuvius Brand Tomatoes reflects the Bisceglia Brothers Italian heritage. The bands of green, white and red represent the Italian flag. Vesuvius is a city on the Bay of Naples in southwestern Italy. Mount Vesuvius, a volcano, is known for its ancient eruption that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. Four Bisceglia brothers emigrated from southern Italy to the United States in 1885. The eventually settled in Morgan Hill where they started growing and canning fruit and vegetables. In 1913 the Bisceglia Brothers moved their cannery to Monterey Road in San Jose, California. In 1919 the Bisceglia Brothers Canning Company was the largest cannery in the world and employed 1,000 workers.
