Description
University of San Francisco soccer team, with NCAA trophy, celebrating Division I championship win over the Indiana Hoosiers, 4-3 in overtime, on December 14, 1980, at Tampa Stadium, in Tampa, Florida. From Misty Housel St. Petersburg, Times Staff Writer: "The five-year rivalry between the University of San Francisco and Indiana University now stands at 4-0 for San Francisco as the Dons defeated the Hoosiers 4-3 in overtime Sunday to wrap up their fourth NCAA Division I soccer championship. The game-winning goal came 8:17 into sudden-death overtime play, as San Francisco's Fidelis Atuegbu powered a pass from Erik Nielson past Hoosier goal-keeper Chris Oswald into the right side of the net. It was a hard-fought game--one San Francisco and coach Steve Negoesco won't soon forget. Indiana controlled the majority of the second half and all of the first, going up 2-0 before San Francisco settled down and started controlling the ball. 'It was a heck of a game,' Negoesco said. 'But I did not give up hope that we would win. It was not the first time we have been behind."
