Description
This Sept. 3, 1931, photograph reveals the entrance to Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 3860 J St. Recessed and hewn from terra cotta and cast stone, the Romanesque-style arch contains sculpted images of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Apostles. The imagery on the recessed arches shows acanthus leaves, palms, serrated hatching and twisted ropes, all of which would have been typical of an 11th century Lombard-style church.
