Description
Born in Worthington, Hampshire-County, Massachusetts on 9 February 1836, Harvey Leonard was the manager and a one of the directors of the Bank of Santa Clara. By age 19 Leonard sailed to San Francisco in 1855. After a couple years of gold mining Leonard contracted rheumatism and set his sights upon farming in Santa Clara. He purchased 280 acres of the Quito Ranch which he developed. He served in the Redwood Cavalry Company during the Civil War after which he became Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Bank of Santa Clara. A keen businessman, Leonard was Vice President of the Central Milling Company of San Jose which operated a multi-million dollar system of flour mills throughout the counties of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito, San Luis Obispo and Monterey.
