Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated February 26, 1944 reads, "Sitting firm and with his eyes fixed on an object, Charlie Chaplin is shown when he came to court to make his formal plea in 'white slave' case."
