Description
Photograph article dated November 24, 1949 partially reads, "The good earth may be just that to Joseph Yen Woo, San Francisco born Chinese who stands to get riches - IF - a wildcat oil well is brought in by Standard Oil Co. on the floor of the San Fernando Valley. Woo and his 17 children - 15 born in the United States and two to his second wife in China - won't need to grow produce, should their dreams come true. The 72-year-old Chinese who moved to the Valley in 1916 from Los Angeles and educated all his children at the San Fernando High School, remembers 'when there wasn't much of anything near his Northridge ranch.'" Photograph caption reads, "Keeping fingers crossed - Joseph Wood with sons Tom and Wayne and dog, Ching, take it easy on front steps of Valley home. Wildcat oil well testing their 68-acre Valley ranch." Ranch was located in Sepulveda, near Sepulveda Blvd. and Lassen St.; See image #00133615 for additional photo in this series.
