Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
James Thompson, known to the Californios as "Don Santiago", was an experienced and well-respected rancher and the ranch manager of Don Antonio Jose´ Rocha. Although using the Rocha Adobe as his home in 1852, Thompson received a five-year lease for half of another rancho, Rancho La Brea, that same year. Thompson had an adobe and corrals on this land. In the late 1850s, Thompson served as the sheriff of Los Angeles County. In 1867, he purchased Rancho Los Encinos from Rita de la Osa, which he used mainly to raise sheep. He only kept that rancho for two years, selling the property in 1869 to the Garnier brothers, who were a family of Basque sheepherders. The Rancho La Brea adobe still stands in the parking lot of Farmers market at Third Street and Fairfax Avenue.
Photo of a rather large adobe identified as the Thompson Adobe, surrounded by numerous plants and trees. A door and window are visible behind the shrubbery, and a tall brick chimney is atop the right side of the roof. It is not known which rancho this particular adobe was located in.
