Description
Created at The Huntington Library's botanical gardens and featuring James Folsom, Director of the Botanical Gardens, "Mr. Huntington's Garden" spans a ten year period starting in 1995, with new episodes produced monthly for broadcast on public television stations in Southern California. In this episode: Folsom at Carriage House (Boone Gallery), backhoe digging out old gas tanks to meet deadline, moving out of old garage to new area, history of Carriage House built in 1911 as Mr. Huntington’s garage, 7,000 square feet including apartments for chauffeur and mechanic, bindery was housed in Garage, Herbarium just moved out of one of the apartments, Boone will open as a new gallery in January 2000, Max Gschwind, gardens superintendent, lived in Garage 1926-60’s, lead being stripped from windows. Folsom at new Botanical Center, public restrooms for new garden area, Conservatory will attach to new Head House, Orchid Digest volunteers using breakroom, Ernest Hetherington (heart and soul of Stewart’s Orchids) and Betty Dunton, Greenhouses - 4, propagation house has misting and reverse osmosis capabilities, 80-90% humidity. Folsom with Kathy Musial and Zsolt Debreczy in Rose Garden, Dendrological Atlas - tree science, both just back from Australia and New Zealand, project has taken them to China, Japan, Taiwan, Chile, Europe, conifer section almost finished, KM helps with editing, Folsom with Gwen Hartley in nursery, Gwen on two-year fellowship with Chanticleer Gardens, Project Seed - “Fast Plants” - go from seed to seed in 35 days, partnership with Pasadena Unified SD to provide science kits for teachers, ends with JPF with Joe Clements at succulent Christmas tree.
