Description
This circa 1910 postcard shows the crumbling central building at Sutter's Fort. When the fort was active, the structure was frenzied with activity vital to the function of the compound, the business interests of the Sutter, and the morale of the fort inhabitants. William Grimshaw was present at Sutter's Fort in 1848/49 and described the central building in the following words: "In the centre of the inside of the fort was a two story adobe building, still standing, the lower portion of which was used as a bar room with a monte table or two in it. This bar was crowded with customers night and day and never closed from one month's end to the other. The upper story was rented by Rufus Hitchcock and wife for a boarding house."
