Photo of two murals or paintings by Albert Herter showing scenes from Spanish California. The image on top shows the building of a mission, the bottom image shows the arrival of the relief ship for the Portola expedition in San Diego in 1769. Albert Herter, an artist and painter of international reputation, painted canvases depicting epic events in the history of California. He was celebrated for his historical murals but was also remembered for two other reasons: as the original owner of "The Creeks", an extravagant 60-acre estate on Georgica Pond in East Hampton, and as the father of Christian Herter, who was Dwight D. Eisenhower's second Secretary of State. Albert Herter died in 1950 in Santa Barbara, California at the age of 79.
