Description
View of new community of Girard in the West San Fernando Valley, showing a few houses and trees dotted in the landscape. This location is present-day Woodland Hills.
"Boulevard Land Co. Looking north over Girard."--text, handwritten on verso. Title devised by cataloger. In 1922, Victor Girard Kleinberger and Boulevard Land Company purchased 2,886 acres, which was subdivided into 6,000 lots. In 1923, Girard built gates, a mosque tower, and a business district with rows of false fronts to entice people to buy lots for homes. He called his new town "Girard" - which would become Woodland Hills in 1941. - Source: West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce web site.
