Description
The iconic marquee of the Crest Theater at 1013 K St. dominates this Oct. 30, 1949, photograph. After having been closed three years for renovation, the theater opened on Oct. 6 of the same year to a crowd of 5,000. The premier showing was “That Midnight Kiss,” starring Mario Lanza and Katherine Grayson, both of whom were present for the event. To the right of the Crest at 1017 K St. is another Sacramento landmark, Levinson’s Books, which was founded by Liverpool, England, native Samuel Levinson. The store moved to 1014 K St. in 1956. To the left of the Crest at 1011 K St. is the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Singer set up operations at the pictured location in 1947, spending $35,000 to build the three-story structure. The business had been located at 1018 J St. prior to its move to K Street. Retail space, administrative offices and classrooms were all housed there.
