Description
On April 7, 1906, after twenty years of military service, Col. Allensworth (1842-1914) was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel making him the first black officer to receive this rank. After his retirement in 1908, Allensworth and four other black men formed the all-black town of Allensworth, California. Six years later, Allensworth was crossing a Monrovia street when he was struck by a motorcycle and killed.
