Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes
The Lytton Center of the Visual Arts was located at 8150 Sunset Boulevard, within the Lytton Savings and Loan Association building, formerly the site of the Garden of Allah Hotel. Considered as one of the earliest corporate art programs in the United States, the Lytton Center actively promoted and exhibited the works of emerging California artists and housed the pre-cinema collection of Lytton Savings and Loan president, Bart Lytton. The center was closed in 1969 after the merger or Equitable, Lytton, and Mission Savings.
Photograph caption reads, "Visitors eye shadow boxes at Lytton Center." The article partially reads, "For the uninitiated, phenakistoscoping is what folks used to do before drive-in movies. It involves looking through a little slit in a spinning wheel and enjoying the illusion that a clown inside is jumping up and down...Core of the center, established a year ago, are more than 1,500 exhibits showing man's efforts over the centuries to capture 'an image of reality.'"; See images #00118994 through #00118997 for all photos in this series published in the Valley Times TODAY weekend section June 20-23, 1963.
