Two men stand near "The Wall", which is located on 5th Street, near Crocker Street in the Downtown area known as Skid Row. The Wall is a place where the homeless can write poetry, thoughts, relate their particular stories, hardships, sorrows, or leave their legacies - if only by name. The unofficial boundaries of skid row are Third and Seventh Streets to the north and south, and Alameda and Main Streets to the east and west; this area is also known as Central City East. It is home to one of the largest stable populations of homeless persons in the United States, with a population estimate of anywhere from 7,000 to 8,000 persons. Photograph dated March 2000.
