Description
These recordings are of an interview with Harold S. Stewart, who sat on a number of boards in the Upland area from the 1930s until around the 1950s. The interview discussed his time on the board of the San Antonio Water Company, the process of pooling gravity water and pumped water, and the tunnel at San Antonio canyon. The first side of the tape outlines how land was purchased, and how the Recession affected different crops and their markets. The second side of the tape discussed the fires in the 1930s and in 1969, which caused damage and burned much of the native brush. Stewart also noted the diminishing wildlife in the area. In the last few minutes of the recording, Stewart discussed how the San Antonio Water Company was the main supplier of water for the groves; the company remained the main supplier because smaller companies failed or were consolidated. Stewart mentioned that the water sold by the company was a mix of low-cost gravity water from the canyon and cost-intensive pumps.
