Description
Photograph enclosed with letter dated 7 May 1953 to Lee de Forest from Charles D. Guthrie of Brooklyn, New York. Guthrie writes, "I am attaching a photo made from negative taken with a small box camera over thirty years ago and the block of concrete is the "Ruins of Old DF or Manhattan Beach" as Woolverton (sic) and I called it while serving on the U.S.S. Kentucky from 1904 to late in 1907. As this station was the most famous of all the early pioneer stations and where I recently found the negative tucked away in my ditty box I was determined you and George Clark were to have copies of it. Shortly after this was taken the Trip Thru The Clouds Scenic Rail Way was torn down and sand from the harbor pumped in and a few years ago while in that vicinity I found a solid block of big apartment houses."
