Description
Taken from Sutter’s Fort and looking across L Street, this circa 1933 photograph shows the Pioneer Congregational Church at 2700 L Street. Built in 1926/27 for a cost of 170,000 dollars, the concrete-shelled church was intended to memorialize the multitude of Anglo-European pioneers that came westward in the second half of the nineteenth-century. On the left side of the photograph is the church’s auditorium while on the right is its social and Sunday school rooms. The church, under the leadership of H.H. Gill, was previously known as the First Congregational Church, but changed its name after moving from its Sixth and I Street location. The old structure’s solid walnut pews, historic bell and Crocker memorial organ were transferred to the church’s new home.
