Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Segment 1 (silent): Geodesic dome in parking lot, with people milling inside it, close-ups of details. According to script, "A strange-looking dome has been erected on the Seventh Street Mall at San Jose State College to herald the arrival of the man who designed it. It's called a geodesic dome and uses an engineering principle which allows such domes to span almost unlimited areas. The principle was invented by R. Buckminster Fuller -- inventor, engineer, architect, poet, mathematician and author. He is due to arrive at San Jose State February 9th for a two month engagement as first Scholar-in-Residence. Inside the dome he will meet with students for study sessions and lectures. More than 3000 of the geodesic domes -- utilizing the principle of triangles invented by Fuller -- have been erected in fifty countries. This dome was put together in only 3 hours by Price Rutzebeck Contractors of Hayward. During his two month stay in San Jose, Fuller will also consult with officials of the city of San Jose to give his impressions of the city and possibly suggest new ideas for its growth." Segment 2 (silent): Large banquet hall full of people at tables, head table at the front, man speaking. Sign behind him reads, "Yes on All 12 Projects / Feb 1st / San Jose Improvement Bonds." Script reads, "A big push was given to the upcoming San Jose Improvement Bond issue this noon at the Ste. Claire Hotel here in San Jose. Over 200 representatives of business, industry, labor, education, and clergy...plus representatives of the news media and city officials...attended a special promotional luncheon sponsored by the Citizens Committee for Improvement Bonds. The event, which was emceed by Committee Co-Chairman John Vasconcellos, was designed to inform local organization leaders of the need for the improvements covered in the bond issue and to ask their support for the measures. Committee Co-chairman Carl Steubenrauch was the featured speaker at the luncheon. He emphasized the economic and aesthetic value in the improvements and the methods of financing these improvements. The bond issue will come before the people on February 1st." Segment 3 (sound): Short interview with Bishop Reuben Mueller. According to script, "The president of the National Council of Churches is in San Jose this evening. Bishop Reuben Mueller, of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, will address nearly a thousand churchmen a the Fairgrounds. They represent the Northern California-Nevada Council of Churches. Bishop Mueller had these comments on church unity..." Segment 4 (silent): Plane on tarmac, sign "Welcome ALCOA Forecast," men ascending stairs into plane, displays of aluminum objects. Script reads, "A flying showcase was the attraction of the day for Santa Clara County defense contractors. The ALCOA Forecast, Aluminum Company of America's custom-styled DC-7, landed at San Jose's Municipal Airport as part of a 5-week cross-country tour. The purpose of the tour is to display to contractors the increased capabilities of aluminum in defense products. The displays included small arms and ammunition, such as fuses and shells... military vehicles, typified by wheels and forged armor components .. underwater applications embodied in spheres and torpedoes...ground support equipment, including bridges, mine detecting devices, shelters and landing mats...and an exhibit emphasizing the total capabilities of aluminum products." 1/20/66 A-D 356
