Description
This 1960 photograph shows State Office Building Number One's frieze and pediment. Crafted by New York City artist Edward Field Sanford, the building's section symbolizes ""The Gift of the World to California"" with the frieze inscribed with the phrase ""Bring Me Men to Match My Mountains,"" taken from Sam Walter Foss's ""The Coming America."" The central figure in the pediment if a female figure with outstretched arms representing California welcoming the world. She is flanked by figures that represent her sea and mountains. Behind her are a buffalo and ox, representing both wild and domestic strength.
