Photograph caption dated July 8, 1959 reads, "Northridge Hospital Joins Defense Plan -- Northridge Hospital nurse Effie Johnson is briefed on use of civil defense radio network by Dr. Donald Barker, center, disaster chairman of Valley branch Los Angeles County Medical Association, and Tim Huntly, communication coordinator for Los Angeles Civil Defense. Northridge becomes first hospital in Los Angeles area to join radio disaster network for use in case telephone communications are destroyed."
