Photograph caption dated March 3, 1965 reads "The Greater Los Angeles Zoo has a new pair of residents by way of Japan." The article partially reads "The raccoon dogs are a gift to the Greater Los Angeles Zoo from the Nagoya, Japan, City Zoo." The animals, called tanuki in Japan, are popular in Japanese folklore. They are a subspecies of the Asian raccoon dog, a close relative of true foxes.
