Photographic portrait of Charles E. Miles, Los Angeles's last volunteer fire chief, ca.1870-1879. Miles is standing at center and is facing slightly to the left. He is holding the end of a bugle on a small table at left, while his other hand is on his hip. He is wearing a large firefighter's helmet, a light colored shirt with a large crest at center, and long dark pants. He has a thick dark beard and dark hair. Miles was Chief Engineer of the Fire Department in 1873, 1874, and 1875. Photoprint reads: "Return to: California Historical Society, 4201 Wilshire, Suite 202".
