John Stevens was born in 1832, Newburyport, Massachusetts. Came to California in 1856 via Panama. Was President of the Pioneer Box Factory, Vice-President of Friend & Lumber Co. Built home on U Street betwwen 21st and 22nd Streets (in the area of Poverty Ridge, later Sutter Terrace). Died in 1914.
