Original photograph has several stains and smudges. In January, 1949, more than half an inch of snow covered the Civic Center in Downtown Los Angeles. In the San Fernando Valley, almost a foot of snow accumulated over three days. Photograph caption dated January 11, 1949 reads "This snowscape was admired by passing motorists and residents in the vicinity of Coldwater Canyon Blvd. The picture was taken by Hunter Borthwick of the Valley Times, while he stood on Coldwater Canyon Blvd. looking south towards Mulholland Drive. The hills surrounding the Valley offered photographers many such opportunities for recording the first snowfall in the lowlands in 17 years."
