Description
This hand drawn and painted rendering of the southern border of the UC Merced campus, was part of an eight piece set developed to capture the design and planning intentions embodied in UC Merced’s 2009 Long Range Development Plan. In this image, the aerial view is perched over the eastern end of the Town and Gown District and looks northeast over the campus and the Le Grand Canal. The rendering also depicts the terminus of Main Street 4.0. The image depicts a number of UC Merced planning concepts. Primary bicycle paths follow the edge of the canals, bridges serve as gathering places and paths, public art creates interest and identity, and pedestrian environments are given precedence. Also visible are rooftop solar panels and transparent walls that facilitate day-lit interiors of campus buildings, features that take advantage of the Valley sunshine. Although not explicitly depicted, the landscape intent for the canal edges is to develop a naturalized informal landscape to give identity to the pedestrian and bike trail system throughout the campus.
