Description
Black and white photographic print of an advertisement published in the L.A. Times and Orange County Register listing and explaining the ways in which Mission Viejo plans on conserving electricity during the Christmas season and beyond. Advertisement reads, "Conserving energy is hard work. At Mission Viejo Company we believe you have to take the first step before you ever get around to the second, third, or fourth step. With the cooperation of our residents and our employees, we have already taken our first step toward the conservation of energy: 1. Christmas - Christmas has always been a nifty time at Mission Viejo ... outdoor carols, a Santa Claus workshop, candlelight parades ... all under thousands and thousands of lights. This year the lights will go on with the first carols, but they will go off again the same evening with lighting limited only to the six nights Santa visits the workshop. 2. Outdoor advertising - We will do everything possible to reduce our outdoor billboard lighting by 65%. We will also reduce non-business hours sales display lighting to include only that which is necessary for security. 3. Gasoline - Our employees with company vehicles have agreed to abide by the voluntary 50 mile per hour speed limit using the right-hand lanes on freeways. Automobile leases are being renewed with smaller compact cars with a view toward the further conservation of gasoline. 4. Car pools - We have provided a staff for a car pool clearing house to be used by our residents as well as our employees. [For information, phone (714) 837-6050 ext. 333] Conserving energy has become a challenge for the whole community. After all is said and done ... the brighest lights of Christmas have really always been found in the eyes of the kids. Mission Viejo, California. 'Where home is a town again.'" The bottom of the print has the following imprints: "Equal Housing Opportunities," "Job #24-1421, 8 col x 21 1/2", L.A. Times, Register, 12/1/73," and "cMission Viejo Company 1973."
