Description
Vallecito Stage Station was a stop in the overland mail route to California in the second half of the 1800s. James E. Birch got the first contract from the US government to carry mail from San Antonio to San Diego. The route his company took went over the mountains using mules and was derisively known as “Jackass Mail.” Birch’s company only lasted 18 months before Birch’s death ended his contract. The Vallecito station in this photograph began by James Lassiter and his family in 1852, and was a stopping place on the mail route and is now located in the Anza—Borrego Desert State Park. Vallecito means “little valley” and refers to the valley where the station is located.
