Autobiography & Reminiscence of Dr. George Augustus Shurtleff, Stockton, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
George Augustus Shurtleff was born in Carver, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, August 5, 1819. From 1842 to 1845 he studied medicine at Perkshire Medical College, in Pittsfield, MA, and Vermont Medical College (Woodstock, VT.) and opened his own practice in Wareham, MA. In 1849, Shurtleff was offered the position of Surgeon of the ship "Mount Vernon" bound for California. On April 17, 1849 he left Mattapoisett and arrived in S.F. on October 2, 1849. He immediately went to the mines in Jacksonville, Tuolomne County, mining Wood's Creek. Early in 1850 he returned to Stockton and on August 3, 1850 was elected to its first City Council. In 1855 he was elected County Recorder of San Joaquin County. From 1856 to 1883 Dr. Shurtleff served various appointed positions for the State Insane Asylum at Stockton. In 1858 he also formed a medical partnership in Stockton but resigned in 1883 due to failing health. Dr. Shurtleff drafted a bill, passed by Legislature in 1872, that resulted in the establishment of a second State Insane Asylum, "Napa State Asylum for the Insane". In 1872, Dr. Shurtleff was elected President of the Medical Society of the State of California, taught in the Medical Department of the University of California, and in 1876, was a Delegate for the State of California to the "International Medical Congress". In 1875, Dr. Shurtleff took an active part in the formation of the "San Joaquin County Medical Society" and was its first President. He also assisted in organizing the "San Joaquin County Society of California Pioneers"
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 135-142, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. This reminiscence includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. It appears that the photographs in this set were dispersed throughout the regular photography collection, but the photographs referenced in the related materials may or may not be these same photographs. This reminiscence covers the period of Shurtleff's life from 1842-1901, his family history and an overview of his life in California. It details his many professional and civic accomplishments, lists the positions he held at the State Insane Asylum and gives a brief record of his experiences mining. Noted is a resolution provided by the Board of Directors of the State Insane Asylum upon his resignation commending Dr. Shurtleff on his life's work.
