The Society of California Pioneers James Monroe Goewey was born in Albany, New York in 1828. He graduated from Albany Academy and went on to study law. In 1847 Goewey began traveling, starting as a ship's boy on board the U.S. Store-Ship "Mount Vernon", commanded by Capt. Given. He first arrived in California in March 1847, but then left and traveled to the Sandwich Islands, Oregon, and Mazatlan. It was in the Sandwich Islands that he first heard news of the discovery of gold in California. He quickly obtained passage on the bark "Mary Francis", commanded by Capt. John Paty, and arrived in San Francisco on September 8, 1848. In the spring of 1849 Goewey went to the mines, and located at Wood's Camp in Tuolomne County. After mining successfully in Shasta County the spring of 1850, Goewey entered into a mercantile business at Horsetown, under the firm name of Goewey, Hough & Co. He would eventually engage in general merchandising, wine and liquor importing, and real estate. He was also an Operating Broker on the San Francisco Stock Board. While in Shasta County Mr. Goewey was a candidate for the Legislature in the Douglass democratic ticket. His opponent was C.R. Street, Editor of the "Shasta Courier" Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p. 23-28, Vol. 3. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The transcription includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. There is a note following this reminiscence that states that "the above was compiled and written by W.F. Swasey and revised and corrected by James M. Goewey Sr., Dec. 18th, 1893." This biography contains some history of the Goewey family. It also includes details on Goewey's travels (including ship and captains names) and the history of his work in California in Real Estate and business. It provides information regarding the subject's political and spiritual affiliations, as well as naming clubs he belonged to. The years covered by this reminiscence are 1846 to 1893.
